Drypoint on zinc is an intaglio printmaking technique in which an image is scratched directly into a zinc plate using a sharp needle. The tool displaces the metal, raising a fine burr along the incised lines that holds ink. After the plate is inked and the surface wiped clean, damp paper is pressed into the grooves under high pressure to pull the ink from the lines. The burr produces characteristically rich, soft, and velvety marks, giving drypoint its intimate, hand-drawn quality.
